Humility is not a dismal depreciation of oneself. It's not groveling in the dust. Either of these would be a denial of being the handiwork of God.

Humility is hard to understand, however here Peter lists it as critical to having confidence during uncertain times. In just three verses he gives clear understanding for this virtue to be real in our lives.
