As believers, we have an enemy. In the Bible that enemy is called the devil. The word itself means that he is one who brings charges against. So, that is what Peter means when he says, "he prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

In this passage Peter speaks as one with experience in this matter and he gives good advice. Peter fell asleep when Jesus asked him to pray. So who is he to advise? Because of where he had been and because of his comeback - Peter is the best one of all to help us in this matter of being alert.
